What is the hidden power of bravery?

“Stay safe.” “Be safe.” “Safe travel.”  What sparks these soothing messages we offer each other?  We are worried. We are nervous. We are afraid.

Why? We feel the weight of the last 20+ years – planes crashing into towers, a collapsed economy, inflation, massive layoffs, looming AI, global pandemic, raging wars, high-pitched cultural and political battles, hurricanes, tornadoes, tsunamis.

We are wary – because we feel vulnerable. We are cautious – because we feel unsafe. We are timid – because we see risks surround us.

We seek safety in our jobs.  We often prefer to work from home. We "meet” our colleagues and customers on Zoom and Teams. We navigate work relationships with HR a close companion.

Why does it matter if we pull back at work and in the world?

Because we yearn for better lives. Because we want positive progress. Because we achieve positive progress with brave action.  Look at Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Malawi. In the business world, see Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates. They all sparked progress by being brave.

Look at your own life. Aren’t you proudest of the progress you make in large and small moments when you are brave?
